My oldest radio, a British built 1931 Philips 930A Local Station Receiver in its art deco arbolite cabinet with bakelite trim and knobs. |
A 1932 Pye G AC mains 3 valve MW/LW/SW TRF table radio in its original art deco style walnut cabinet with matching bakelite knobs and trim. |
My 1933 Belgian built SBR Ondlinette 5 valve MW/LW superhet radio. This little set works really well and operates just like a modern radio. |
A Pilot X-65-B 240v AC mains 6 valve MW/LW/SW superhet radio in its attractive art-deco style rosewood case. Built in New York USA in 1935. |
A 1945 Murphy A98 AC mains 5 valve MW/LW/SW radio in its large brown bakelite cabinet. This is a very good quality radio which has needed very little work done to it to put it back into good working order. It sounds very good too. |
A 1946 British built Decca Double Decca 46 4 valve mains/battery MW/LW/SW portable radio. It has a nicely designed cabinet, but its chassis was not well thought out and it proved very unreliable. This one though has been sorted. |
And another 1946 Decca Double Decca 46 mains/battery portable 4 valve radio |
My pretty little 1946 Defiant midget AC/DC mains 5 valve MW/LW/SW radio in its mottled brown bakelite cabinet. |
A 1946 PYE L75B New Baby Q 4 valve MW/LW battery portable. This set is 'new old stock', but still needed a lot of restoration to its chassis. |
My 1946 Ultra T401 AC mains 4 valve MW/LW/SW radio in its brown bakelite cabinet with a white urea-formaldehyde front. |
A 1947 GEC BC4835R "Compact" AC/DC 6 valve MW/LW/SW table radio in its walnut bakelite case. An interesting feature of this little radio is its thermometer style dial. |
My 1947 Murphy A100 AC mains 5 valve MW/LW midget radio in its maroon bakelite case. This set is no larger than a transistor radio and it still works well. |
My 1947 Philips 371A/15 5 valve MW/LW/SW table radio in its compact mottled brown bakelite cabinet. Now fully restored and in full working order. |
A 1948 Murphy A124 4 valve AC mains "baffle board" design MW/LW/SW table radio |

My Bush DAC90A AC/DC 5 valve MW/LW compact bakelite cased table radio. This was the best selling valve set of all time in the UK and its production ran from 1950 to 1959. This example was built in 1955. |
My early 1950s KB FB10 midget 'Toaster' 5 valve AC mains MW/LW radio in its white painted bakelite case. |
My 1951 Bush TV22 mark 1 405 line black & white television set in its brown bakelite cabinet. It has 15 valves and a 9 inch Mullard tube and it works very well. |
A little Canadian built 1951 Philco 81-122 Transitone 110 volt 5 valve MW radio. A rarity on this side of the Atlantic and it works OK. |
A Philips BS311AN AC mains MW/LW/SW 5 valve radio in its wooden case with ivory urea formaldehyde front and perspex dial. This little radio was built in Sweden in 1951 and it works very well. |
A 1951 PYE P43 AC mains 4 valve MW/LW radio in its brown bakelite cabinet. This P43 is as austere looking as my later white example is OTT. |
Another 1951 PYE P43 radio with a silver green painted front |
A US built 1951 RCA Victor 1R81 Livingston AM/FM 8 valve 110 volt AC mains radio in its mahogany bakelite case. This a very early VHF radio but it covers 88 - 108 MHz and for AM it even has an internal ferrite rod aerial. Its aircraft spinner dial was a popular design on late 1940s early 1950s US built radios. It still works remarkably well and is almost certainly the only example of this radio this side of the Atlantic. |
A 1951 Ultra U696 Troubadour 5 valve MW/LW compact table radio in its ivory urea-formaldehyde case. This pretty little radio has just been totally restored and now works really well. |
