1956_Grundig_3028_Hi-Fi_Zauberklang.jpg A 1956 German built Grundig 3028 Hi-Fi Zauberklang AM/FM 6 valve radio. This is a huge well built radio with 3 loudspeakers and it sounds absolutely fabulous with extended bass that makes the windows in my house rattle ! 1956_Bush_VHF61.jpg A 1956 British built Bush VHF61 8 valve AM/FM radio in its dark brown bakelite cabinet. One of the first VHF radios built in the UK and it remains a design icon of the 1950s. 1954_Philips_BD244U_Philetta.jpg My pretty little 1954 German built Philips BD244U Philetta 6 valve AC/DC AM/FM radio in its dark brown bakelite cabinet. This is an early European built VHF radio and it is tiny, smaller than many transistor sets, yet it works remarkably well and has become a cult collectible in Germany. 1951_Zenith_H-615_Long-Distance.jpg A little US built 1951 Zenith H-615 Long Distance MW portable AC/DC 110 volt 6 valve radio in its maroon bakelite cabinet. A rarity this side of the Atlantic, it works very well and sounds very good too for a small portable. 1957_Bush_MB60.jpg My 1957 Bush MB60 5 valve mains/battery MW/LW portable radio. The radio's case was designed by David Ogle and was later used by Bush for the TR82 model which remains the UK's most familiar transistor radio. 1953_Ultra_R786_Coronation_Twin.jpg A 1953 Ultra R786 Coronation Twin 4 valve MW/LW mains/battery portable radio. 1953 was the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, hence its name. 1952_PYE_P43.jpg A 1952 PYE P43 AC mains 4 valve MW/LW radio in its white urea formaldehyde plastic cabinet. Presumably made for the bedroom it has boldly coloured orange knobs, blue dial with green lettering. 1951_Philco_81-122_Transitone.jpg A little Canadian built 1951 Philco 81-122 Transitone 110 volt 5 valve MW radio. One of the last valve radios built by Philips in the UK. 1962_Philips_B4X23A.jpg A 1962 Dutch built Philips B4X23A 7 valve AM/FM radio 1961_Philips_B7X14A_Reverbeo.jpg My 1961 Dutch built Philips B7X14A Reverbeo 10 valve AM/FM stereo radio. One of the most advanced valve radios ever built, it has a built in reverb echo feature which in practice is a bit of a gimmick. It works in stereo with a stereo turntable or tape recorder, but in mono only on radio. This example is as new. 1946_Decca_Double-Decca-46.jpg A 1946 British built Decca Double Decca 46 4 valve mains/battery MW/LW/SW portable radio. It has a nicely designed cabinet, but its chassis was not well thought out and it proved very unreliable. This one though has been sorted. 1957_Roberts_R77.jpg A tiny British built 1957 Roberts R77 4 valve MW/LW battery powered portable radio in its binocular like leather case. This and the wooden cased R88 were the last valve radios built by Roberts but this was smaller in size than their first transistor set the RT1 released in 1958. 1951_RCA-Victor_1R81_Livingston.jpg A US built 1951 RCA Victor 1R81 Livingston AM/FM 8 valve 110 volt AC mains radio in its mahogany bakelite case. This a very early VHF radio but it covers 88 - 108 MHz and for AM it even has an internal ferrite rod aerial. Its aircraft spinner dial was a popular design on late 1940s early 1950s US built radios. It still works remarkably well and is almost certainly the only example of this radio this side of the Atlantic. 1953_PYE_P75.jpg A British built 1953 PYE P75 5 valve MW/LW/SW radio. Its wooden cabinet is a wonderful colour. 1956_Bush_VHF62.jpg A 1956 British built Bush VHF62 8 valve AM/FM radio in its wooden cabinet. Same chassis as the Bush VHF61. 1956_Philips_B3G63A.jpg A 1956 British built Philips B3G63A AM/FM 7 valve radio in its black bakelite case. This early example has a frame aerial. 1955_Roberts_RMB_late.jpg A 1955 Roberts RMB 4 valve MW/LW/SW mains/battery portable radio. It is unusual to find a 1960s radio in a bakelite case but then these Philetta radios do run hot ! 1958_PYE_VHF2D_Continental.jpg A British built 1958 PYE VHF2D Continental 6 valve AM/FM radio. It looks like a German radio but its case is nowhere near as well built as the ones on my Grundigs. However its components are excellent quality and it works well and it sounds very good. 1950_Bush_DAC10.jpg A 1950 Bush DAC10 5 valve AC/DC MW/LW radio in its brown bakelite cabinet.
